The Bishop of Dubrovnik, Mgr Dr Josip Marija Carević, wanted to permanently mark the 1900th anniversary of Christ’s death and suffering for the salvation of mankind. Therefore, he initiated an action to construct a cross on Mount Srđ in 1933. In collaboration with the Diocesan Chapter, led by Canon Don Niko Gjivanović, construction technician Ugo Vernazza and the office of construction engineer Silvije Sponza, the technical director of the IMAR quarry on Hvar, a design proposal for a stone memorial cross was devised. The design of this monument, intended to accentuate the City of Dubrovnik and its environment, was a real challenge, so it is no wonder that Kosta Strajnić, the chief conservator, joined the project indirectly, after he had seen the proposal, a model of Sponza’s stone cross, during the process of obtaining construction permits.[1]
